In recent years, he research on the processes of industrialization and addresses aspects of business history, particularly he analyzes the development of the Spanish food industry, and the international scope of entrepreneurial firms in the globalization process. His doctoral thesis focused more specifically on agrarian history he analyzed changes in land ownership, land use, production and utilization of water resources, and explored the processes of specialization, intensification and diversification of agricultural economies Mediterranean.
In particular, he analyzed the epidemiological transition and the demographic transition, changes in mortality patterns and family organization of peasant societies.
He started his first investigations in the field of historical demography. His main research interests focus on the social and economic history of the modern world. He is a member of the Scientific Advisory Committees of the Investigaciones de Historia Económica-Economic History Research and the Historia Agraria. He is currently an Editorial Board member of Revista de Historia Industrial, Revista de Demografía Histórica, América Latina en la Historia Económica- Economic History in Latin Amercia. He served as Secretary General of the Asociación Española de Historia Económica (2009-2014), and as Editor of the journal Historia Agraria (1991-2006).
